Discover four practical steps leaders can use to face fear, build courage, and move forward with confidence — even when uncertainty looms.

Last week we celebrated Halloween here in the States, and that morning, while visiting my son’s middle school, I overheard a few sixth graders proudly insisting that nothing about Halloween scares them. Their conversation made me smile — and made me think.

Fear isn’t just a childhood theme. It’s something that shows up regularly in my work with professionals and leaders — even if we rarely call it by name.

While fear is not a preferred topic in most workplaces, it is a common experience for professionals and leaders at all levels. My executive coaching clients often describe it in different terms: hesitation, self-doubt, avoidance, or indecision. And while we all logically know it’s only human to experience fear, many of us never take the time to understand how to manage the emotions that come with it — or how to move forward strategically in spite of it.

Through my work with leaders, I’ve found four steps that help turn fear from a constraint into a catalyst for growth. These steps don’t necessarily eliminate fear, but they ensure it won’t keep us from making decisions, seizing opportunities, or leading with confidence.

Step 1: Acknowledge the Fear

Give yourself permission to recognize what you’re feeling. Naming the fear helps you confirm whether the perceived cause is actually the real root cause. Awareness is always the first step towards clarity and action.

Step 2: Talk About It

Share your fear — not just privately with trusted friends or mentors, but, when appropriate, openly with colleagues or team members. Leaders who model transparency and vulnerability earn greater trust and loyalty. Talking about fear removes its power and reframes it as something to learn from rather than something from which to hide.

Step 3: Strategize Through It

Once you’ve named and discussed the fear, you’ll naturally begin identifying strategies and solutions to move through &/or past it. Shifting into problem-solving mode puts you in motion — and motion itself is progress.

Step 4: Take Action

Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zones. It happens just outside of them — in that stretch zone where fear meets forward movement. When you take a step, even a small one, you prove to yourself that fear doesn’t have the final say.

Try It for Yourself

What’s one thing right now that’s creating feelings of fear for you?

Can you confirm that the cause you’re naming is the root cause?

Who could you talk to about it in the next 24 hours — someone skilled at turning problems into strategies?

How quickly can you take one step forward, even if the fear remains?

You don’t have to conquer fear to lead courageously. You just have to keep moving.

For those that prefer to consume written content over video, below is the edited transcript from my most recent video, “The Power of the Pause.” You can find the link to the full YouTube video below if you prefer to watch while reading.

Let’s talk about the power of the pause.

When you allow yourself to take your foot off the gas from time to time, it can be very powerful in your leadership, in your personal productivity and in your well-being.

I want to share with you three different types of pauses that I have been very intentional about recently, throughout this whole year. The first is what I call a micro-pause. These are those opportunities where, for example, I decided I would step outside and record this quick video outdoors instead of staying within the four walls of my office. A micro-pause might be taking some deep breaths in between back-to-back Zoom meetings, getting fresh air for 30 seconds between ending a meeting and starting the next task on your list. Micro-pauses really are about giving your brain and your body a quick reset, and it really helps with sustaining energy and focus.

A Spontaneous Break

The second type of pause is more of the spontaneous pause. Yesterday was a great example of that for me. I was really in the flow, working on some content for a new training, and it was about 3:30 when I finished working on it. I knew that I had accomplished a lot and I had reached a really good stopping point. Instead of telling myself that I should keep working until 5:00, I allowed myself to spontaneously wrap up my workday at that time because it just felt right. I knew that I would be able to recharge my brain and my creativity if I stopped before I hit that diminishing point of return. This second type of pause can be very rejuvenating. And in that instance, it was really a decision to preserve my creativity and to help me be excited when I stepped back into the creative process the next time I worked on the training content, the next day or a couple days later.

Pausing with Intention

The third type of pause is the one that we’re more familiar with. I call it the intentional pause, when we are designating specific days or weeks to step away from the business. There are some really key components that have to be put in place for us to truly check out, sign off, and detach ourselves from our business. The first component is communication – communicating the boundaries of being unavailable and what people should do when you’re not their go-to contact. The second is to make sure you have systems in place so the work can continue without you. The third is really about empowering your team and making sure that you are building into your business and developing your team and your leaders within your organization – empowering them to operate with confidence without you being a wall away, a house away or a phone call away.

Taking Action

I want to encourage you to really think about how you are building into your schedule the short-term, micro pauses, the spontaneous pauses, and being intentional and strategic about the longer pauses.

We all know the benefits of getting outside of the day-to-day. Stepping away is when we typically have great ideas. We can be more of an innovator and allow our brain to wander about what’s next and what’s possible. Yet there is often a big gap between what we know and what actions we actually, consistently take.

Are you embracing the power of the pause? How can you & the members of your team and organization embrace the power of the pause to recharge, reset, and refuel, and reimagine what’s possible for your business?

This month we are wrapping up our series on The ASCEND Method™ by highlighting the importance of developing systems. All five of the preceding fundamentals will have the greatest impact and return on investment when they become systems in a leader’s business and life. As these fundamentals become ingrained both on the personal and professional front, peak performance and productivity can be fully realized.

Systems Simplified

Systems are really just habits, routines, processes, and/or best practices. They can run the spectrum from extremely simple to widely complex. For example, a daily routine of returning the car keys on the same hook is a simple system to ensure timeliness and ease for daily commuting. An organization that hires 10 or more new employees each month, and that is maintaining a 90% retention rate, likely has a complex system in place, addressing multiple stages of an employee’s life cycle. Whether they involve 1-step or hundreds of steps, think of systems as an acronym: “Saving You Space Time Energy Money.” [Barbara Hemphill, Productive Environment Institute].

Why are systems important?

Defining, documenting, and consistently implementing systems helps preserve mental energy for the more unique situations and critical decisions required of leaders throughout each day, thereby avoiding decision fatigue. A good system quite literally shortens the road to success

Need some real-world examples of how best to systematize the fundamentals of The ASCEND Method™? Check out these ideas below, implemented by some of my high-performing clients.

Saving (Mental) Energy

Having systems in place can support fundamental #3 – communicating boundaries – which leads to better energy management. My client LA defined with her marketing team what constituted a true emergency that would require her immediate attention versus the important needs of the team that could be brought to LA’s attention during the daily morning huddle or her mid-day office hour time block for team collaboration/support. This not only empowered her direct reports to solve problems on their own, but also allowed her as the team leader to direct her time and energy towards the highest level projects and organization needs.

Saving Money

Not surprisingly, a system for expense reporting saves money! The easier the system the greater the compliance rate, and having a tool at the team’s fingertips [the Quickbooks app] increased my client TL’s ability to write off expenses with a 95% compliance rate, an improvement of 50% from the prior year.

Saving Time

At my client NM’s organization, finalizing meeting agendas with aligned participant meeting expectations 24 hours prior to bi-monthly leadership team meetings resulted in meetings ending on time, a drastic increase in consistent attendance by all leaders, and a noticeable increase in accountability for task completion between meetings with documentation of promised deliverables.

When leaders develop, document, and consistently implement systems, both at the personal level and organization-wide, performance levels increase internally and clients and customers receive more consistent, higher-level service. As one of my favorite authors and experts on systems, James Clear, states, “You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.” As you close out 2024 and look ahead to 2025, look for opportunities to establish and improve the systems that drive your actions, your team, and your business towards peak productivity and sustainable success.

Need help establishing the right systems for you and your team? Let’s connect!

Fourth quarter is typically the most critical time for leaders and organizations to be focused upon planning and goal setting. While this is not the only time of year leaders and professionals must dedicate time and effort towards being proactive and strategic, it is an ideal time to adopt &/or recommit to proactive planning practices that can become instrumental disciplines for successful leaders.

Key Planning Disciplines

As you and your team create the vision and the action plan for 2025, here are some key strategies to integrate into how you are running your days, weeks, months, and really…your life!

Follow a workday start up routine. Start each day with 5-10 minutes dedicated to creating your ideal plan for the day. Resist the urge to start your day responding to emails or firing off text messages (and please do not do this immediately after waking up!). Instead, kick start the day by proactively assessing the events already on your calendar and anticipating needs from team and/or clients, so you can get out ahead of any obstacles or detours to your ideal plan. Then, stay committed to the plan you put in place and maintain your priorities and boundaries. This daily discipline will ensure you stay in control and at the wheel, driving the day based on your priorities and not someone else’s emergencies.

Review and preview every week. Plan your work then work your plan. You have heard this pithy saying a thousand times before, but have you put it into practice on a consistent basis? Not only is daily planning essential, but so is developing a weekly review and preview ritual. Most of my clients prefer Friday afternoons or Sunday evenings to “rise above” the noise of the day-to-day and survey the scenery from above.

Use this weekly ritual to review the previous week and acknowledge the successes and progress made by yourself and your team. Then, preview the upcoming week by identifying any incomplete tasks or projects from the previous week. Use this “status report” to align the carryover tasks with the upcoming week’s new priorities. Ask yourself questions such as, “What additional needs might the team have of me?” and “What personal priorities do I need to create time for during my work week?” Map out your week before it starts! A former client who put this discipline into place was able to stop working 8+ hours each Sunday, once she began trusting these upcoming weekly roadmaps she created each Friday afternoon before leaving her office.

Ensure you have appropriate team visibility. As a leader, you want to have your finger on the pulse of the business at all times, which includes being aware of your teams’ needs and weekly priorities. Don’t get overly involved, but have awareness of each teams’ highest priorities and deadlines to anticipate needs and potential obstacles. This can greatly reduce how often you as a leader have to be reactive to unexpected problems. Frequent and open communication with each team leader within your organization also helps to establish trust and build relationships, which encourage transparency and enhance collaboration.

Make meetings meaningful. Inefficient meetings are the #1 workplace distraction that hurts productivity. Create company-wide best practices and rules of engagement to ensure every meeting scheduled is happening for a clear and productive reason. Create agendas prior to meetings that identify specific outcomes. One of my clients follows the motto, “No Agenda, No Attendee!” With the right set of expectations and proactive planning, each meeting participant will be better prepared and will find meetings are a valuable use of time. Lead by example and commit to the discipline of designing meetings that matter!

Master The ASCEND Method™ All six fundamentals of The ASCEND Method have a high impact on your productivity levels and contribute to being a more proactive leader.

Being a leader in today’s world comes with many challenges. Among those challenges is the never-ending request from employees, clients, family and friends for your time, input, and attention. Eliminating interruptions (and distractions) is a key fundamental from The ASCEND Method™ that ensures you are able to lead the growth and innovation you are most excited about as a leader, while continuing to meet the day to day needs of those who matter most to your business and your life.

The productivity fundamental of eliminating distractions and interruptions will more easily fall into place if you have already implemented strategies to support the previous principles from The ASCEND Method™ (Advocating for self, Simplifying your focus, Communicating boundaries). As you continue taking the reins on your environment and calendar, you will undoubtedly begin seeing the ROI of self-discipline and self-management.

Interruptions and Distractions

First things first, distractions and interruptions are not synonymous. Distractions are internally driven; most often we distract ourselves! We allow the “shiny objects” to grab our attention even when we know the importance or urgency of the task at hand. Our thoughts are often what pull us away from our own work, which means we have a lot of control over the elimination of distractions.

When I work from home, for example, I often close the blinds because I know how easily I will be (visually) distracted by neighborhood and street activity. A client of mine has adopted the habit of starting her day with a “brain dump” in her paper planner, in an effort to proactively capture any errant thought or reminder that is likely to pop into her mind later that day, as she settles into her workday.

Interruptions, by contrast, are externally driven. Typically it is other people or technology creating interruptions throughout the day. According to a recent study, knowledge/desk workers experience interruptions every three minutes. It is nearly impossible to achieve productivity in 3 minute increments! Once you begin identifying the people or prompts that most frequently interrupt you, the more successfully you can preemptively eliminate them and create greater opportunities to focus and produce!.

Project: Elimination

Begin with curiosity. Spend a few days at work and at home playing the role of observer. I have challenged many clients to have a sticky note next to their computer where they tally the number of times they are interrupted or distracted while working from their desk. Figure out the ratio of self distraction to external interruptions. With this new-found awareness, you can now implement an action plan. Once you have a greater sense of awareness, there are many tactics to minimize what is drawing you away from your focused work.

Maximizing Impact

Below are three key strategies to become a more focused leader while maximizing your impact:

Turn off notifications. You most likely do not need notifications enabled for all of your apps, nor do you need them active on your phone AND watch AND computer AND tablet! Notifications are always the pre-set default because software and app companies want to keep pulling you into their product. It really is on you to take that extra step and turn off notifications wherever and whenever possible. If you didn’t have the bubble or the pop-up, would you actually forget that you had an inbox? Of course not! This is a great example of where we have conditioned ourselves to be reactive. This is a very easy place to flip the script and be proactive. Without the notifications, you choose when you are going to seek out the information you need, instead of allowing the messages to find you at all moments of the day.

Work Offline. If you are a desk/knowledge worker, your computer is likely essential to 80% of your tasks, but often you can get those things completed without always being connected to the internet. Look for opportunities to disconnect for small periods of time, so the outside world doesn’t have access to you via your inbox, social media, and/or breaking news alerts. Are there parts of your day where you can turn off your wifi to create a helpful barrier? Building this habit can contribute to staying singularly focused and can easily eliminate the reflex of accessing information on a whim. Both Microsoft and Google have a feature allowing you to work offline to prevent incoming messages to lead you astray. With the click of a button, you can cut your access to the internet and others access to you for specific periods of time so that you are staying fully focused.

Be Available, not Overly Accessible. Leaders often feel the pull to be “just a call or a wall away” at any moment for their team. The reality is, you do not have to have a 24/7 open door policy to be a supportive and caring leader. As a leader, you can set up designated times each day or week when you are fully available to your team and balance those times with other blocks of protected time when you are unavailable. This is an example of setting healthy boundaries in a workplace. By modeling this behavior, you will empower the team to minimize their own interruptions. Ideally, this can become part of the workplace culture; Cultivating work relationships and respecting the importance of deep work time.

If your team or organization needs a reset to enhance focus and contain the interruptions, reach out to explore a customized training to maximize the final quarter of the year!

We are continuing our exploration of The Ascend Method™ this month with our discussion of “C – Communicating Boundaries.”

Boundaries in the workplace is a pretty hot topic these days. Whether you are a former “Yes Woman/Man” or someone who naturally sets and holds boundaries with ease, the need for boundaries is becoming more critical than ever. Work/life boundaries are essential for our overall well-being and happiness, in addition to ensuring we are achieving productivity and peace of mind each day.

The Harvard Business Review defines boundaries as “limits we identify for ourselves, and apply through action or communication. When we define what we need to feel secure and healthy, when we need it…we can do wonders for our well-being at work and at home — which, in turn, allows us to bring our best selves to both places.”

Our current culture places an immense pressure upon us to be accessible to everyone, at all times. With the advent of cell phones, laptops, and smart watches, we are available at the touch of a button. Many of us have become addicted not only to our favorite apps and tech tools, but also to the idea of being needed and being accessible all the time.

The technology that allows us to be instantly connected with one another is clearly here to stay, and will likely only increase in speed and accessibility. It is time to acknowledge that it is largely up to us to (re)establish the boundaries that we uniquely need for a healthier balance in our lives. No one else is going to put them in place for us! I firmly believe the first step we all must take is to consider a perspective shift on the implications of being overly accessible vs being available with limits. Being unavailable during parts of each day is not something to feel guilty about, nor is it rude. It is a form of self-care and self-prioritization, and is vital to actually being present & productive when it matters most.

If you are ready to embrace that perspective shift and lead the way in embracing boundaries, read on for some practical strategies to communicate and uphold healthy boundaries.

Available or Overly Accessible

If you don’t create opportunities throughout your day when you are unavailable, you will never be able to tap into deep focus or achieve flow. Without boundaries, people will constantly be pulling your attention away from your priorities and diverting it to their priorities. As leaders and team players, we need to find the right balance of being available yet not overly accessible.

Allow yourself to close the proverbial door to your office (and life!) from time to time. Put on headphones, relocate to a quiet corner of the office, and/or work offline throughout the day and week. Block out an hour or two on the family calendar that is reserved for me time. These reasonable constraints will actually result in healthier relationships and allow you to be truly present- body and mind- with others throughout the week. An added bonus is that sometimes, when you aren’t immediately accessible, your team or family will solve some problems on their own!

Communication is Key

It’s important to proactively discuss rules and best practices around communication with coworkers and with family, before a line is crossed too far or too often. Be direct, honest, and gentle in sharing your needs and limits. As Brene Brown teaches, “Clear is Kind.” Don’t expect people to infer your preferred boundaries. Focus on how a specific boundary can be mutually beneficial. For example, if you introduce a boundary that eliminates internal workplace email responses after 6:00 pm, your team will feel free to also shut down their inbox in the evenings. Lead by example and be equitable and flexible in accommodating others’ boundaries. Work to normalize communicating boundaries within a team or family, assuring others there is no need to feel guilty when expressing one’s limits or needs.

What’s Your Emergency?

This strategy can lead to a significant reduction in the number of “urgent” interruptions you encounter throughout each workday. Gather the team preemptively to discuss and clearly define/align on what constitutes a true emergency. In most organizations and industries, there are very few circumstances where a leader or team member must address a problem immediately. Decide collectively what truly constitutes the need to “kick down the door,” speed dial your mobile after-hours, &/or call in reinforcement to get your attention. Many so-called “emergencies” can be re-classified as “High importance” or “Time sensitive.” Create a response plan and reasonable response time for these types of situations. Once the leader and team members have a shared and agreed-upon understanding of how promptly problems must be dealt with – and who else on the team has the authority and autonomy to resolve those problems without the leader’s involvement – everyone will benefit from the de-escalation of what was once considered a “five-alarm fire.” This strategy alone can spark the shift in perspective on the impact of being unavailable.

Boundaries through Role Definition

As a leader, it is vital to define, document, and distribute roles and responsibilities for each team member (including yourself) so the right people are being asked to do the right tasks. When there is clarity and transparency around each person’s responsibilities and highest priorities, it can eliminate duplication of work, minimize scope-creep, and support and empower the team in creating their own boundaries. A client of mine experienced a measurable decrease in internal conflict and an increase in task ownership when he published the company’s updated R&R documents and created open dialogue at team meetings around each role and how each team member was tasked with prioritizing and organizing their responsibilities.

Achieving Mastery

Creating and clarifying boundaries can be challenging in professional and personal settings. Yet the extra work and courageous conversations almost always lead to rewarding results and a healthier workplace culture where respect and trust thrive. Communicating boundaries may not come naturally for us all, but adding the strategies above along with being willing to engage in conversation will undoubtedly lead to a more balanced work life and personal life.

The solution to the habit of multi-tasking is simple, yet requires awareness, intention, and practice. Use The ASCEND Method's second fundamental to learn how to uni-task and get meaningful, deep work done.

Last month, we introduced you to the cornerstone of The ASCEND Method™: Advocate for Self, where we discussed the importance of prioritizing personal well-being to enhance overall performance and leadership. Continuing our journey to redefine productivity in today’s hectic world, let’s delve into our next fundamental: Simplify Your Focus.

In his insightful book Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again, Johann Hari argues that our capacity to pay attention is being undermined by a world filled with distractions. This isn’t just a matter of willpower; our brains are literally being rewired, making it increasingly difficult to think deeply. Hari points out, “I found strong evidence that our collapsing ability to pay attention is not primarily a personal failing…this is being done to us all…by very powerful forces, including Big Tech.” He asserts, “This crisis is human-made, and it can be unmade by us too.”

As we navigate our environments – both at work and at home – where multitasking is glorified, it’s crucial to understand that our brains aren’t designed to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Hari notes, “If you spend your time switching [tasks] a lot, the evidence suggests you will be slower, you’ll make more mistakes, you’ll be less creative, and you’ll remember less of what you do.” A study cited by Hari even found that “most office workers in the U.S. never got a (full) hour of uninterrupted work in a typical day.” This same study found that technological distraction—just getting emails and calls— had the potential to cause a drop in a worker’s IQ by an average of 10 points.

Not only is multitasking a myth, but we become less productive individuals and make less of an impact in our work when we try to get too many things done in too little time.

Simplify Your Focus

The solution to the habit of multi-tasking is simple, yet requires awareness, intention, and practice. This is why the second fundamental of The ASCEND Method™ encourages us to embrace the power of single-tasking and to simply our focus. This really does require the “undoing” of a habit that is not serving us (multi-tasking) and learning to flex a new muscle; uni-tasking. The good news is, there are countless strategies that can be adopted to strengthen our ability to focus longer & deeper, and countless opportunities throughout each day to take back control of our focus.

Consider these strategies below which have had the greatest ROI not only in my personal experience but for many of my clients who lead teams and organizations:

Time Blocking: By dedicating specific times to specific tasks, we can reclaim the ability to concentrate. Time blocking isn’t just a scheduling exercise; it’s about truly committing to one task at a time and challenging ourselves to see it through to completion before allowing ourselves to move on to the next activity.

Using a Timer: To stay committed to the time block and task at hand, set a timer for each task! This low-tech, simple tool can help you stay focused by serving as a visual reminder of the task you are committed to. It also provides a clear signal when it is time to take a break or move on, which can boost productivity and reduce fatigue.

Closing Unnecessary Tabs: Each open tab is a potential distraction! By having access only to the information you need for the current task at hand [which is typically only 1-2 tabs on your browser] you minimize the potential of your attention being pulled away and therefore reduce the likeliness of switching tasks unnecessarily -and often unintentionally!

Technology Tools: Use apps and settings that reduce the distraction of notifications. Create time limits for social apps like Facebook and Instagram. Turn off pop-up notifications to minimize technology interruptions. Consider using apps like Forest and Freedom which provide even more constraints and can gamify your quest to improve your ability to focus.

Eliminate Devices: When possible, leave devices like smartphones and smartwatches in another room or turn them off during focused work sessions. Out of sight, out of mind helps keep distractions at bay. Of course you knew this already…but when was the last time you actually implemented this strategy?

Set Intentions: Before beginning any task, clarify what you want to achieve. Speak it out loud, write it down in your planner/on a post-it note, or even better communicate to a colleague what your specific goal is for the next 30 or 60 minutes. This practice sets a purposeful tone for your work and aligns your actions with your goals and taps into the power of positive accountability.

Looking Ahead

By simplifying your focus, you’re not only enhancing your immediate productivity; you’re also setting the stage for more meaningful engagement and success in every aspect of your life. Understanding and implementing these strategies allows you to leverage the areas in your environment, your workplace, and your life where you have the greatest levels of control.

Consider exploring and applying The ASCEND Method™ to steer clear of a reactive and stress-filled life.

In today’s always-on culture, distinguishing between mere busyness and genuine productivity is crucial, yet more challenging than ever. A truly productive day isn’t defined by how overloaded your schedule is, but by how effectively you manage your highest priorities, tasks, time, and energy to achieve meaningful outcomes.

When was the last time you stopped to (re)define productivity and time management on your terms, in order to thrive in your unique circumstances? If you are not sure how to start that process, consider exploring and applying The ASCEND Method™ to steer clear of a reactive and stress-filled life.

Why the ASCEND Method™?

I created The ASCEND Method™ after observing a critical need amongst leaders and their teams to achieve more with less stress and greater clarity. The method emphasizes setting a solid foundation for productivity through personal habits and boundaries, which in turn radiate outward, enhancing team dynamics and overall business success. This method is not just about managing time but about managing energy and priorities in a way that sustains both leaders and their teams long-term.

The ASCEND Method™ Defined

The ASCEND Method™ offers a systematic approach to transform everyday busyness into meaningful productivity. This method can maximize an entire team’s potential and drive collective success through six transformative steps:

Advocate for Self

Simplify Your Focus

Communicate Boundaries

Eliminate Distractions

Navigate Priorities Proactively

Develop Systems

The First Fundamental: Advocate for Self

Advocating for Self is the cornerstone of The ASCEND Method™ and is fundamental to every aspect of productivity and leadership. This step goes beyond mere self-care; it sets a powerful precedent that health and well-being are critical drivers of individual performance and collective achievement and success.

Strategic Self-Care as a Leader

Leadership demands resilience, clarity, and emotional intelligence and stamina, all of which are significantly bolstered by regular self-care practices. Research from an article in the National Library of Medicine [Does Self-Care Make You a Better Leader? A Multisource Study Linking Leader Self-Care to Health-Oriented Leadership, Employee Self-Care, and Health] found that leader self-care tends to go along with staff care, which in turn relates to improved employee health. Self-care is undoubtedly a determinant of healthy leadership.

Setting Cultural Norms

By prioritizing personal well-being, leaders cultivate a workplace culture that values balance and health, both essential for reducing burnout and boosting job satisfaction and employee retention. Leaders however must make their own self-care visible and truly “walk the talk.” Leaders who participate in self-care alongside their team members will likely reap the greatest rewards. The days of leading by the mantra of “do what I say, not as I do” are long gone! Programs like those at Google, focusing on mindfulness and emotional intelligence at all levels within the organization, demonstrate how well-being is integral to fostering an innovative and collaborative environment.

Self Care In Action

Leaders who model self-care not only maintain their own performance but also empower their teams to adopt similar practices. As John C. Maxwell notes, “Leaders need to be the change they wish to see.” This alignment between personal practice and professional expectations promotes a healthier, more productive workplace culture.

Self-care is as unique as each individual within a team. For some, it involves physical exercise and exertion. For others, it can be as simple as adopting breathing techniques and implementing stretch breaks throughout the day. Time in nature, meditation, prayer and gratitude practices are also amongst the self-care practices that leaders and employees find most effective and rewarding.

Have you ever wondered why the most transformative leaders aren’t always in the spotlight? When these individuals go “quiet,” it is often because they are busy working behind the scenes, cultivating and elevating their skills with a secret weapon: an executive coach. You’ve heard it said by many leaders, in many different ways; successful people have a team of supportive individuals behind them at every stage – for both the highs and lows – on their path towards fame and fortune, progress and prosperity.

So, what is it that makes executive coaching the secret weapon of successful leaders?

Keep reading to uncover why the best in business turn to executive coaches to unlock their true potential.

What Really Sets Executive Coaching Apart?

Forget the traditional image of a business coach delving into spreadsheets and strategy sessions. An executive coach is in the business of mining deeper insights from within the client. It’s about sparking those “aha” moments through thought-provoking questions that lead to a client’s growth and enlightenment. Think of it as the difference between being given a fish and learning how to fish—through the use of executive coaching methods, a coach can teach you how to “fish” for the “life” of your leadership journey.

Why Do High-Flyers Need An Executive Coach?

Do top athletes win titles and gold medals unassisted? Never. They have coaches for every twist and turn of their career. Why should top executives be any different? If you are playing in the big leagues of business, having a coach in your corner is like having a master strategist, a wise mentor, and a peak performance trainer all rolled into one.

The Game-Changing Perspective: Can You Read the Label from Inside the Bottle?

Here’s a brain teaser for you: can you read a label from inside the bottle? Not likely. That’s where executive coaches come into play, offering a novel, unbiased and outside perspective that’s crucial for seeing the big picture and identifying your blind spots as a professional and as a leader. The right coach will help you step out of the constraints of your own perspective, to look at your challenges and opportunities from a fresh angle, which will make a world of difference in making strong, strategic decisions.

Building a Culture of Smart Leadership

In today’s fast-evolving work environment, flexibility and insight are the names of the game. Executive coaches encourage clients to create a workplace culture where trust, innovation, and communication thrive. Work and career advancement is never just about clocking in and out; it’s about making every minute count towards the greater mission of the organization and its people.

As summer approaches, many leaders contemplate stepping away from the office to rejuvenate and connect with family and friends. Yet, the prospect of disconnecting and letting go can seem daunting without the right preparations in place. This is more than just planning a much-needed vacation; it’s about demonstrating empowering leadership so your team can thrive in your absence, ensuring they feel fully equipped and confident to drive the business forward.

The key lies in creating a culture of trust and independence. You can begin by reflecting on your current delegation strategies and how you have developed your organization’s R&Rs (Roles & Responsibilities). Are you truly cultivating a sense of responsibility and self-sufficiency within your team, or are there simply stopgap solutions in place to bridge the gap during your time away? Preparing your team is crucial to truly disconnect and be present with your loved ones. It is also a critical step in building a succession plan, to ensure you are building a business and a legacy that will last long after you have set off into the sunset!

Strategic Delegation

Evaluate how tasks are assigned and managed within your team. Ensure that your team members are not just familiar with tasks but are fully capable of handling crucial operations independently and confidently. This can be achieved through the following action steps:

Documentation: From systems and processes to procedures and best practices, make sure these are well-documented and accessible to your trusted advisors or senior team members, regardless of who executes these steps presently.

Empower Your Team: Encourage team members to take on greater leadership roles as early in their tenure with your company as possible.. This empowerment allows them to demonstrate their capabilities and readiness to lead.

Define Priorities: Clearly distinguish between what’s urgent, important, and what is a true emergency. Have proactive discussions about these categories to minimize unnecessary interruptions, not only while you are away for travel or family time, but also during the day to day operation of the business.

John C. Maxwell in Leadershift reminds us, “It’s wonderful when the people help their leader, but it’s even more wonderful when the leader helps the people.” By setting your team up for success, you’re not just stepping away; you’re stepping up your leadership.

Building Trust and Confidence

The goal is for you to be able to detach completely, feeling secure in the knowledge that your team can handle the day-to-day operations. This requires building a deep-seated trust that fosters confidence among your team members. They should know that the company can not only survive but thrive in your absence. As Andrew Carnegie said, “It marks a big step in your development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you could do alone.”

Communication and Boundaries

Before you turn on your “OOO” auto-responder, be sure to take these important steps:

Set Communication Guidelines: Define what warrants a check-in and establish boundaries for these communications. Consider designating a specific time early in the morning or a single point of contact at the office to streamline communication. Decide ahead of time what communication tool is to be used.Eliminate the need to check multiple tools each day or else you will spend far more time than you realize making sure you have not missed anything.

Trust But Verify: Trust your team’s abilities but also ensure they have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities in your absence. This balance between trust and responsibility is crucial. Have 1:1 conversations prior to your time away to reinforce agreed upon roles and responsibilities, whether temporary or ongoing.

Leadership: Making Everyone Better

Stepping back to let others lead not only helps alleviate personal burnout but also strengthens your team’s ability to manage without your constant presence. As Maxwell further suggests in his Leadershift book, shifting from making your team happy to helping them grow is essential. By letting go, you allow your team the space to develop and demonstrate their leadership, which in turn enhances the entire organization.

This summer, as you plan your time off, embrace the liberating power of letting go. Prepare your team, set the right processes in place, and watch as they lead in ways that might surprise you. It’s the best gift you can give to yourself and to those you lead.

Ready to transform your leadership and see how effective letting go can be? Let’s work together to help you prepare for a summer of growth—for both you and your team.
