When you hear the word COACH, what image comes to mind? For most, it is a sports coach, standing on the sideline next to a team of athletes, calling out plays and watching the game on the field or court. A coach is widely accepted (and expected) to be the adult leader who teaches younger individuals – usually athletes- fundamental skills. A coach is charged with developing higher level skills in others, and managing the behavior of those whom s/he leads. In the world of sports, individuals and teams always include a coach (or several coaches); in fact it would be very odd for a team or athlete to compete without one by her/his side, right? Yet anywhere outside the lines of a court or field, you likely have left behind this idea of having a coach to help you perform at your best. Why is that?
While it is true that the majority of adults and professionals do not refer to anyone in their life as their coach, I’d like to suggest that you actually do have coaches in almost every corner of your world. If you use the above definition of a coach [a leader who teaches individuals fundamental skills, has the capacity to develop higher level skills in others, and manages the behavior of those whom s/he leads], doesn’t that describe many of the experts you seek out for help in your day to day life?
- Your medical doctor is your physical health coach. S/he monitors your health and your personal “stats” (blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight); prescribes exercise plans and gives diet recommendations; s/he coaches you on how to live your healthiest life.
- Your dentist is your oral health coach. S/he guides you on preventative care to avoid cavities; advises you on best practices and bad habits to avoid (like eating sugar); s/he coaches you on how to maintain a healthy smile.
- Your therapist or counselor is your mental health coach. S/he helps you improve your parenting skills; guides you in navigating personal relationships; s/he coaches you to manage your mind and your emotions in as healthy a manner as possible.
The list could go on; your auto mechanic, your trainer at the gym, your financial advisor, your CPA. You have MANY people in your life who are serving the role of coach, simply under the “guise” of another title.
The point is this: whether you call them coach or some other title, you have experts who are coaching you to maximize your physical health, mental health, oral health, etc.
>>Have you considered also having an expert/coach in your corner to assist with your professional growth and the health of your business?
>> How could a business performance coach provide support in the foundational areas of your business and provide the expertise to help you develop the higher level skills needed to scale your business to even greater levels of success?
Don’t let the athletes of the world be the only ones who benefit from having coaches surrounding them and supporting their growth and their pursuit of big goals. Tap into the many coaches you already have in your life, and consider filling the gaps where they exist. If you need a coach to walk you through the steps of reaching your PEAK, then drop me a line.
