When you think of a compass, what images come to your mind? Pictures of explorers? The True North symbol? Trails on a wooded, winding mountain?
A compass is well known as an essential tool that guides you towards your destination, keeps you moving in your intended direction, and helps you get back on course should you find yourself on a detour. It is a reliable tool that will always help you course-correct. And if you start your journey with a compass in hand, you will be able to avoid those detours and wrong turns.
This is exactly why the analogy of a coach as a compass works so well.
THE PERFECT ANALOGY
If you’ve worked with a coach before – a coach of any kind- you likely know how accurate this comparison truly is.
An athletic coach guides his/her athletes towards the championship event, and supports the athlete day in and day out, with a focus on the fundamental skills of the sport and a strong mindset to overcome physical challenges and losses (aka bumps in the road) along the way.
A life coach often serves as the “tool” to get individuals back on track, after detours (obstacles) like illness, divorce, and/or loss, and helps people re-discover and re-define their true north in life.
A business coach provides the proactive support needed by an entrepreneur, helping him/her avoid wrong turns, providing strategy and accountability to stay the course, and anticipating potential challenges before they present themselves.
THE PROACTIVE APPROACH
A compass is a tool for the explorer who is prepared and strategic, just as a coach is a resource for the individual who is proactive and resourceful. For example:
- Athletes train with a strength coach to avoid injury and strengthen the body, not only to recover from setbacks and trauma on the field.
- People work with life coaches to avoid and prevent PTSD, depression, and anxiety; Therapists are not only for those who suffer long-standing mental illness.
- Health-minded individuals work with doctors to create a regime of vitamins and a healthy diet to prevent illness; Doctors are not only for the physically ill.
Who serves as a compass in your life and business? What tools do you have in place to ensure you are following the right path and avoiding hidden detours and unexpected road blocks?
Consider working with a coach not because something is wrong with you or because something needs to be fixed, but because you have strengths you want to maximize, skills you want to master, goals you want to crush, and impact you want to make on others and on the world.
Successful explorers have a trusted compass in their pocket at all times, to show them the way when the path becomes unclear.
