Five Tips to Live a More Productive Life… Get your Complimentary Checklist Today

Last week we celebrated Halloween here in the States, and that morning, while visiting my son’s middle school, I overheard a few sixth graders proudly insisting that nothing about Halloween scares them. Their conversation made me smile — and made me think.

Fear isn’t just a childhood theme. It’s something that shows up regularly in my work with professionals and leaders — even if we rarely call it by name.

While fear is not a preferred topic in most workplaces, it is a common experience for professionals and leaders at all levels. My executive coaching clients often describe it in different terms: hesitation, self-doubt, avoidance, or indecision. And while we all logically know it’s only human to experience fear, many of us never take the time to understand how to manage the emotions that come with it — or how to move forward strategically in spite of it.

Through my work with leaders, I’ve found four steps that help turn fear from a constraint into a catalyst for growth. These steps don’t necessarily eliminate fear, but they ensure it won’t keep us from making decisions, seizing opportunities, or leading with confidence.

Step 1: Acknowledge the Fear

Give yourself permission to recognize what you’re feeling. Naming the fear helps you confirm whether the perceived cause is actually the real root cause. Awareness is always the first step towards clarity and action.

Step 2: Talk About It

Share your fear — not just privately with trusted friends or mentors, but, when appropriate, openly with colleagues or team members. Leaders who model transparency and vulnerability earn greater trust and loyalty. Talking about fear removes its power and reframes it as something to learn from rather than something from which to hide.

Step 3: Strategize Through It

Once you’ve named and discussed the fear, you’ll naturally begin identifying strategies and solutions to move through &/or past it. Shifting into problem-solving mode puts you in motion — and motion itself is progress.

Step 4: Take Action

Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zones. It happens just outside of them — in that stretch zone where fear meets forward movement. When you take a step, even a small one, you prove to yourself that fear doesn’t have the final say.

Try It for Yourself

What’s one thing right now that’s creating feelings of fear for you?

  • Can you confirm that the cause you’re naming is the root cause?
  • Who could you talk to about it in the next 24 hours — someone skilled at turning problems into strategies?
  • How quickly can you take one step forward, even if the fear remains?

You don’t have to conquer fear to lead courageously. You just have to keep moving.
